Fellow of the ASBMR

The Fellow of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) program recognizes long-term ASBMR members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of bone and mineral science. The program is committed to recognizing the breadth and diversity of the Society’s membership. Preference will be given to individuals who have shown a commitment to ASBMR by having served as a volunteer in the Society or as a Society representative to another organization or initiative. Fellows are nominated by their peers, followed by evaluation and selection by a review committee.

Become a Fellow

Eligibility Criteria:

Be a current Full Member or Emeritus Member of ASBMR.

Been a Full Member of ASBMR for at least ten years (does not have to be continuous).

Demonstrated significant contributions to the field.

Published at least five articles in JBMR® and/or JBMR® Plus (Annual Meeting abstracts included).

Nominator Eligibility Requirements:

Nominators may not be affiliated with the nominee’s current institution.

Nominators must be a current ASBMR Full or Emeritus member.

Award Nomination Form

One letter of support from nominator – letter should include:

Description of the nature and extent of professional relationship with nominee.

Areas in which the nominee has demonstrated significant contributions to the field of bone and mineral research.

The nominee’s full Curriculum Vitae (CV) – CV should include:

At least 5 JBMR/JBMR Plus publications (including ASBMR Annual Meeting abstracts).

List of nominee’s service as an ASBMR volunteer or Society representative to another organization (e.g., Council or Committee Service; abstract, journal, grant or award reviewer; meeting speaker or moderator, Society representative to another organization, etc.).

The nominator is responsible for ensuring that all material is submitted by the deadline. Nominations received after the deadline or incomplete nominations will not be considered.

Review Process

Completed nominations will be considered by a review committee comprised of ASBMR members and chaired by a member of the Membership Engagement Committee (MEC). The recommended Fellows will be presented to the ASBMR Council at its summer meeting for approval. All Nominees will be contacted immediately following the ASBMR Summer Council Meeting.

How Fellows Are Honored:

Selected Fellows will receive a pin and certificate and will be acknowledged at the Annual Meeting.

Newly elected Fellows will be featured in the ASBMR e-News Weekly during the year the Fellow is elected.

Fellows will be listed on the ASBMR website.

Fellows will be invited to the President’s Dessert Reception at the Annual Meeting.

Fellows may be invited to appear in ASBMR membership marketing efforts including videos and brochures.

The nomination portal for the 2024 Class of Fellows has closed. Candidates will be notified in July.

FAQs

Q: Do my years as an “In-Training” member of the ASBMR count towards the ten or more qualifying years for a Fellow?
A: No, your years as an “In-Training” member do not count. Only years spent as a “Full Member” will count towards your qualification.

Q: I have been a member of ASBMR for over ten years, but not consecutively. Do I still qualify as a Fellow?
A: Yes, as long as the total years of membership equals or exceeds ten, those years do not need to be consecutive.

Q: I have revelant publications in other journals. Will those count towards my five required publications?
A: No, you must have at least five publications in either JBMR® or JBMR® Plus, or an ASBMR Annual Meeting Abstract.

Q: I am a retired Emeritus member; do I qualify to be a Fellow?
A: Yes, Emeritus members will qualify as a Fellow as long as they meet all other standard qualifications for the program.

Q: I have a colleague at the same institution but in a different department than me. Can they nominate me as a Fellow?
A: No, your nominator may not be from your current institution.

Q: What happens if I fail to renew my membership in future years?
A: Your Fellow designation will be active as long as you keep your ASBMR membership current. Once your membership is inactive, your Fellow status will also be inactive.

Q: As a nominator, what are my responsibilities?
A: You will need to provide a letter of recommendation that describes the nature and extent of professional relationship with nominee; indicates the areas where the nominee has demonstrated significant contributions to the bone, mineral and musculoskeletal science field and evaluates the applicant's level of interest and long-term potential to contribute to ASBMR. You will also need to provide a copy of the nominee's CV.

Q: If I am not selected this year, may I reapply?
A: Yes, you are encouraged to reapply.
