On X @JWestendorfPhD, @ASBMR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 30,2024
Jennifer Westendorf, Ph.D., has taken office as the new president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).
"My desire to serve as President stems from my deep gratitude for the society as the peer and mentoring community that has supported me throughout my career as an independent scientist," Westendorf stated. "In this role, I am particularly passionate about advancing research in women's health, growing the pipeline of the next generation of basic, translation and clinical researchers, and engaging a broader range of stakeholders from around the globe. I aim to sustain and expand the diverse membership of ASBMR, fostering outreach to other scientific societies, and focusing on creating strategic, coordinated learning and mentoring opportunities. While centered on the Annual Meeting, these efforts will extend musculoskeletal education year-round to ensure comprehensive support for members in training."
Dr. Westendorf is the Margaret Amini Professor of Orthopedic Regenerative Medicine Research and chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, United States. She established and led the Mayo Clinic Office of Research Equity, Inclusion and Diversity from 2017-2022. The research of Dr. Westendorf and her team is revealing new insights into common skeletal diseases and focuses on validating new molecules as treatment targets. Their goal is to increase knowledge that leads to the rational design of novel therapeutics for musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis. Dr. Westendorf received the ASBMR Fuller Albright Award in 2009 and was named a Fellow of ASBMR in 2018.
Dr. Westendorf will serve as President of ASBMR until the conclusion of the ASBMR 2025 Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, United States next September.
