Message from ASBMR President Laura Calvi, MD – May 23, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
While our Annual Meeting Program Committee, led by Roberta Faccio, has been hard at work since last June to build the 2024 Program, we now are eager to organize the presentation sessions to showcase our members’ most recent, exciting research. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the Annual Meeting by submitting abstracts. This year, we received an impressive total of submissions in basic, translational and clinical research, attesting to the enthusiasm and dedication of our community! Thank you to all the expert reviewers that are in the process of scoring the abstracts that will drive the research presented in Toronto!
Please explore the Early-Stage Investigator (ESI) Program and Career Development sessions at #ASBMR2024. Our program commences with the First Time Attendee Webinar, designed to help orient new ASBMR members to the activities offered at the Annual Meeting. This will be followed by an ESI networking reception on Thursday, September 26. Join us for career development sessions tailored for both early career and mid-career attendees on Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to stay updated for forthcoming announcements, and in the interim, explore our programming on the ASBMR website.
My thanks to the Early-Stage Investigators (ESI) Committee for putting together these exciting offerings, co-chairs Drs. Benjamin Frisch and Sabashini Ramchand and their Annual Meeting Working Group members Drs. Lauren Surface, Reene Ormsby, Erin Bumann, and Jialiang “Shirley” Wang.
Last month, our inaugural THRIVE Cohort, along with Principal Investigator Dr. Rhonda Prisby, and Advisory Committee members Drs. Marja Hurley and Nilsson Holguin, participated in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Network of Minority Research Investigators (NMRI) Annual Workshop that took place in Bethesda, MD, USA. Attendees delved into topics such as the significance of DEIA in the scientific realm, effective grant writing techniques, maintaining work-life equilibrium, and benefitted from enlightening scientific presentations. We look forward to their continued participation in next year’s workshop, as well as their participation to the ASBMR Annual Meeting in Toronto.
If you have not done so already, I invite you to join us in acknowledging Osteoporosis Awareness & Prevention Month. We encourage you to utilize our social media toolkit to contribute to raising awareness about bone health and ongoing research in the field. Throughout the month of May, ASBMR is sharing through our social media channels valuable insights, resources, and tips on addressing and preventing osteoporosis. Stay engaged and interact with us by using the hashtag #OsteoporosisAwareness.
This month the Society is also observing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month by recognizing and celebrating the contributions of our AAPI members—spotlighting individuals at various career stages. I would like to extend my gratitude to DEIA committee member Yingzi Yang and DEIA Social Media Committee liaison Emily Quarato for leading this campaign.
Sincerely,
Laura Calvi, MD
ASBMR President
