Together, the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education and the ASBMR Early Stage Investigator Subcommittee join forces to include collaborations for the revamped ASBMR Fund for Research and Education Research Grants. The program provides funding to a promising young scientist and a collaborator who are (1) currently seeking to learn a new technique, (2) in need of obtain additional funding to successfully complete a project, or (3) foster a new collaboration.
Grant submissions can be basic, clinical or translational and the primary focus must be on bone, mineral and musculoskeletal research.
These awards are open to U.S. and international ASBMR members. International members living outside the United States are encouraged to apply.
ASBMR will not be accepting applications in 2024.

- *Foster a New Collaboration* Applicants must be from separate institutions
Application Formatting Requirements
All materials should be prepared with font type Arial, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype, Georgia or Times New Roman and a font size of 11 points or larger. Single line spacing is acceptable, with a 0.5 inch margin. Figures, charts, tables and figure legends may be smaller in size (10-pt font minimum) but must be clear and legible.
All materials must be in English.
One application should be submitted between each ESI applicant and collaborator pair.
Successful applicants will be asked to report on progress at the end of the first year and to provide research highlights resulting from this award, such as abstracts/manuscripts and new grants every year for 4 years in order to track the benefits of this funding mechanism. Any abstracts/manuscripts presented or published must indicate that they received funding from this award. Results may also be highlighted on the ASBMR website or in the weekly newsletter.

Learn a New Technique
Examples of new clinical, basic and translational techniques:
1. Developing new assays for relevant analytes, e.g. measuring glycolytic end points in osteoblasts to assess energy metabolism
2. Developing a new assay for intact FGF-23 for use in study of phosphate regulation by osteocytes
3. Histomorphometric analysis
4. Gene expression analysis
5. RNAseq
4. Knock out and knock down techniques
Required Application Materials
- Justification of Need Statement: Explains the need for additional funding through the ASBMR Fund for Research and Collaborative Grant Program, and specifies if the funding will support (1) learning a new technique, (2) successfully completing a current research project, or (3) fostering a new collaboration. Applicants should include a full budget detailing the intended expenses to be covered by the award with a detailed description of how the funds will be spent, and how and where the work will take place. Other current funding support should be included if the ESI(s) already have substantial funding. This grant funding may not be used for salary support. (2-page limit).
- Summary of the Research Project: Explains the objectives, aims, and approach of the project. Include any desired learned techniques, research goals, mentors, contributions to science, innovation and methods (maximum 3 pages - references can be on a 4th page).
- Letter of Support: A letter from the institution or mentor confirming the applicant’s eligibility status and indicating that he/she has the space and equipment necessary to perform the proposed research.
- CV/Biosketch: Each individual should submit a CV or Biosketch that includes Contact Information, Education, Training, Positions Held, Awards/Honors, and Publications. CV or NIH-style Biosketch formats are recommended (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms/biosketch.htm).
Complete a Current Project
Examples of previous projects the award has helped complete:
1."Mechanical stimulation by whole body vibration in an Chronic Kidney Disease Bone and Mineral Disorder model in Wistar rats"
2."Studies to determine the risk of mineral-targeted alkaline phosphatase treatment on cardiovascular function using mouse models of adult hypophosphatasia displaying vascular calcification as co-morbidity"
3."Zebrafish as an animal model in human osteoporosis research"

Foster a New Collaboration
Example of a collaboration project:
1. "Training in novel techniques to evaluate muscle fiber composition and metabolism"

- Collaborative Interests Description: One paragraph describing the collaborative interest between the investigators and how it builds on ASBMR strategic priorities to bridge basic/clinical research or international collaboration. The paragraph should explain how the project will directly promote collaboration and benefit the ESI applicant(s) in their establishment of an independent research program (1-page limit).
Investigators seeking to foster a new collaboration must apply to do so with another ASBMR member at a different institution (no history of previous collaborative work). Preference will be given to collaborations between two ESI members, but ESIs are allowed to initiate collaborations with a senior investigator, as long as they are not a former mentor, and they have no collaborative history together.
