Diversity and Inclusion Statement of Principles
The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) membership is a diverse collection of individuals from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures who comprise a host of life experiences, values, and beliefs. Our diversity is not only reflective of the world, but it also makes us better and more innovative. Systemic racism, sexism, ableism, culturalism, colorism, and heteronormative bias are unfortunately still prevalent across all aspects of life. While the Society has made significant strides in some areas, we recognize important areas of potential growth for the Society going forward.
Given this, we want to state publicly that:
- We are One Global ASBMR Family and we respect and embrace the diversity that we encompass. We will treat each other with mutual respect.
- The ASBMR condemns racism, discrimination, and harassment in all forms. We will not tolerate practices and expressed viewpoints that exclude or demean anyone.
- The ASBMR is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and productive environment that fosters open dialogue and the exchange of scientific ideas, promotes equal opportunities and treatment for all members, and is free from harassment and discrimination.
- The ASBMR is committed to eliminating systemic and institutionalized inequities by ensuring that there is more diversity in our leadership, editors, advisors, reviewers and authors.
These principles herein apply to the expectations of conduct for all ASBMR members, volunteer leaders, attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staff, contractors, volunteers and guests attending or participating in all Society events and activities.
Establishing principles is the first step, but we know actions speak louder than words. We will work with our governing Council and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Committee to track and ensure diversity in both the ASBMR membership and leadership, as well as develop an official Member Code of Conduct.
We are One Global ASBMR Family, and we want to ensure that our ASBMR family is a safe and inclusive space for everyone across all cultures and backgrounds.
