As the ASBMR Annual Meeting is less than two months away, I wanted to take this opportunity to emphasize the Society’s investment in travel aid to Vancouver this October, highlight the two Pre-Meeting Symposiums and remind you of some upcoming Annual Meeting deadlines.

Congratulations Cassandra Smith – Recipient of the 2023 Betsy Love McClung, RN, MN Travel Grant

ASBMR is pleased to announce Cassandra Smith as the recipient of the 2023 Betsy Love McClung, RN, MN Travel Grant. Ms. Smith is a Registered Nurse working in the Department of Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic.

The ASBMR Betsy Love McClung, RN, MN Travel Grant, is given in memory of Betsy Love McClung, RN, MN and her role in supporting the professional development of nurses and allied health professionals caring for patients with osteoporosis. This grant is funded by the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education. Congratulations Cassandra Smith!

ASBMR Mourns the Loss of Beatrice Jara-Almonte Edwards, M.D., M.P.H.

It is with sadness that we note the death of member Dr. Beatrice Jara-Almonte Edwards, an internationally known leader in bone health and osteoporosis whose career spanned more than four decades in multiple therapeutic areas, including palliative medicine, geriatrics, cancer and aging, and bone health and osteoporosis. At the time of her death on February 17, 2022, Dr. Edwards was the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care at Central Texas VA and Professor at the University of Texas, Dell Medical School in Austin, Texas. Dr. Edwards received the ASBMR Junior Faculty Osteoporosis Research Award in 2010, which allowed her to assess functional status and humerus fractures and their long-term outcomes.

Please join us in remembering Dr. Edwards’ by leaving a note or sharing a memory.

Seeking Member Case Studies for Discussion at the ASBMR 2023 Annual Meeting

The ASBMR 2023 Program Committee is issuing a call for challenging diagnostic or management cases in metabolic bone disease to be discussed at this year’s Challenge the Expert - Metabolic Bone Disease session to be held on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM at the ASBMR Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

If you wish to share a case study, please complete the application form. The deadline to apply is August 25, 2023, at 5 PM EDT. For more information, please contact Erin Dalder-Alpher, Program Manager, at edalderalpher@asbmr.org.

Limited Space Available in Vancouver for Member/Institution Events

Want to hold an alumni gathering or other social function while in Vancouver this fall for the ASBMR Annual Meeting? The Society has limited space available during the 2023 Annual Meeting to accommodate such functions. If interested, please email ancillaries@asbmr.org.

Applications are due by September 15, 2023, for approval without incurring a late fee. After this date, meeting space cannot be guaranteed. If you have any questions, please reach out to the ASBMR Business Office.
